How to Split a Restaurant Bill Fairly
Last updated: May 2026
Splitting a restaurant bill should be simple. In practice, it's one of the most reliably awkward moments in social dining. Someone had the steak and three glasses of wine; someone else had the pasta and water. Splitting equally feels unfair. Working it out manually takes ages and someone always gets it wrong. Here's how to do it properly.
The equal split — when it works
Splitting the bill equally works well when everyone has eaten and drunk roughly the same amount, or when the group knows each other well enough that small differences don't matter. It's the fastest method and avoids any awkwardness about who had what.
The tip calculation is straightforward: add the tip percentage to the total bill, then divide by the number of people. On a £120 bill with 10% tip, each of four people pays £33. Use our tip calculator to work this out instantly.
The proportional split — when it's fairer
When people have had significantly different amounts, a proportional split is more equitable. Each person pays for what they ordered, plus their proportional share of the tip.
If the subtotal is £120 and Sarah had £40 of food and drinks, Sarah represents one third of the bill. With a 10% tip of £12, Sarah's share of the tip is £4. Sarah pays £44 total.
Our unequal bill splitter handles this automatically — each person enters what they ordered and the calculator works out their total including their fair share of the tip.
Common mistakes
The most common error is forgetting the service charge. If a 12.5% service charge is already on the bill, adding another 10% tip on top means everyone is effectively tipping 22.5%. Always check the bill before calculating a tip.
The second most common error is dividing by the wrong number of people. If one person isn't eating, or a child is sharing a meal, adjust the headcount accordingly.
Using technology
The simplest solution is to use a bill splitter tool. Our split bill calculator lets each person enter their items, automatically calculates proportional tips, and generates a WhatsApp message with each person's total that you can share instantly with the group. No arguments, no confusion, no one getting short-changed.
