How Much Should You Tip a Taxi Driver in the UK?

Last updated: May 2026

Tipping taxi drivers in the UK is one of those social conventions that most people follow without ever really thinking about the rules. Unlike restaurant tipping — where there are broadly agreed norms — taxi tipping is more casual and variable. Here is everything you need to know.

Do you need to tip taxi drivers in the UK?

No — tipping taxi drivers in the UK is optional. Unlike the United States, UK taxi and minicab drivers are not dependent on tips to make a living wage. A tip is always a gesture of appreciation, never an obligation.

That said, rounding up the fare is a common and well-understood convention. Most passengers do it automatically without thinking of it as a formal tip — it is simply the easiest way to pay without needing exact change.

How much to tip a black cab in London

London black cab drivers (hackney carriages) are among the most highly trained taxi drivers in the world, having passed the Knowledge — a gruelling exam requiring them to memorise thousands of routes across the city. Rounding up to the nearest pound or adding 10% for a longer journey is a standard gesture of appreciation.

On a £12.40 fare, most people hand over £13 or £14 and wave away the change. On a longer airport run costing £60–70, adding £5–7 is generous and well-received. There is no expectation of more than this.

How much to tip a minicab or private hire driver

Minicab and private hire drivers — those booked through an app or phone rather than hailed on the street — operate on fixed fares agreed upfront. Tipping is less expected here since the fare is already set, but rounding up or adding £1–2 for good service is appreciated.

If a driver helps with heavy luggage, navigates difficult traffic without complaint, or provides a particularly smooth and comfortable journey, a small tip is a kind acknowledgement of good service.

How much to tip an Uber driver in the UK

Uber has an in-app tipping feature that appears after your journey. Tipping via the app is entirely optional and many passengers skip it — Uber drivers are aware of this and will not be offended.

If you do want to tip, £1–2 for a short journey or 10% of the fare for a longer one is generous. The in-app tip goes directly to the driver. Tipping in cash is also fine if you prefer — simply hand it over as you leave the car.

When to tip more generously

There are situations where a more generous tip is a particularly kind gesture. If a driver helps carry heavy shopping or luggage, waits patiently while you finish a call, navigates around unexpected road closures to get you to an appointment on time, or simply provides genuinely excellent and friendly service — acknowledging this with a larger tip is entirely appropriate.

Similarly, tipping more generously late at night, in poor weather, or on bank holidays when drivers have chosen to work is a thoughtful gesture that many passengers make.

Tipping taxi drivers abroad

Tipping conventions for taxis vary enormously around the world. In the USA and Canada, 15–18% is expected. In Japan, tipping taxi drivers is considered rude. In most of Europe, rounding up is standard. In Egypt and Morocco, negotiate your fare first — then tip on top.
